At CCMI, we care about people having helping relationships that improve their lives. Our organization and the services that we offer are grounded in the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing, and we are dedicated to teaching skills and redesigning systems to support effective partnerships between caregivers and the people and families they serve in a variety of contexts. CCMI works with organizations to make changes to their care systems to support use of the skills and approaches being taught. Trauma-Informed Care is an approach that recognizes the prevalence of trauma and it’s impacts on health, wellness, and behaviour. Care that is trauma-informed is provided in a way that is accessible and appropriate to people who may have experienced trauma, and improves care for everyone by enhancing safety, empowerment and collaboration.

CCMI’s Strategies for Well-being program works with individuals to address the impacts of distress, compassion fatigue, burnout and secondary trauma. Each virtual session is a collaborative effort, with the facilitator offering approaches and skills to create a supportive environment to learn and share. Examples of topics and skills might be:

  • Mindfulness exercises
  • Self-exploration activities
  • Guided imagery
  • Gratitude practices

Motivational Interviewing is a strengths-based approach to conversations that helps draw out people’s motivation and commitment to change. It is a skill that works well for supporting people to work through ambivalence or complex situations so that they can move towards the changes that are important to them. The core skills can be learned by anyone interested in supporting others to make change.

Brief Action Planning is a self-management support approach to help people make action plans to address the aspects of their health or situation that are most important to them. It is a practical and highly structured technique that is based on the literature and evolving understanding of what works and doesn’t to help people change.

Brief Action Planning is designed to:
• Incorporate the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing (compassion, acceptance, partnership, and evocation)
• Uses a stepped care approach
• Use a person- and family-centred health care approach
• Build Self-Efficacy
• Develop skills for independent self-management
• Create concrete and realistic plans in under 10 minutes

CCMI’s Health Literacy offerings emphasize the importance of being able to support patients and communicate clearly so that patients and family members can truly participate in care. Participants will gain an understating of health literacy concepts and learn practical skills for engaging with patients to ensure clear and effective communication.

Informed decision making is a way to engage patients, clients, and peers in their own care by working in partnership with them to identify the best course of action. Training focuses on a conceptual understanding and structured approach to an informed decision making conversation. Informed decision making is a conversation about patient and family values, potential benefits and risks of available options, and possible next steps.

CCMI’s person- and family-centred care workshops provide participants with concepts to guide the development of person- and family-centred health care at individual, system, and community levels. Brief Interventions Workshops focus on teaching practical approaches for structuring conversations about health and MI-consistent ways of giving information and advice and is based on Brief Action Planning. Can be customized to focus on a specific clinical topic (ie. SBIRT* for substance use, Tobacco cessation). Techniques include using an empathetic style and supporting a person’s sense of self-efficacy or optimism that they can change.

feedback, working with leadership, system redesign, case study
review, materials review, and translation into practice.

CCMI is happy to collaborate with you to plan customized skill
workshops and webinars to meet the needs of your organization.
Examples might include

  • A person- and family-centred care webinar series or workshop
    that includes and overview of guidelines or requirements that
    are specific to your state or province.
  • A health literacy workshop and for high-school counsellors that focusses on how to give information about specific illnesses that are prevalent in the population.
  • Or a motivational interviewing workshop for corrections officers.

CCMI’s Train the Trainer Courses help people who are already proficient in a content area to gain the skills and confidence to conduct learning sessions of their own. Trainees are taught by CCMI Master Trainers and are introduced to transformative learning approaches designed to help learners apply new skills in practice. Successful trainees will come away with hard copies and online access to resources for conducting their own workshops (including a PowerPoint presentation, handouts, and a customizable training plan).
