This self-paced online course introduces the core principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) and its role in creating person-centered, high-quality systems. Learn about trauma, resilience, and universal design while gaining practical skills to apply TIC principles in real-world settings.

This course is focused on system-level precautions, and does not teach clinical skills or therapeutic modalities for screening or treating people suffering from the effects of trauma.

Course Details

Goal:

Learners will understand that TIC is critical to person-centred health-system transformation and gain practice in applying the principles of TIC to a small system-change opportunity.

Objectives:

  • Review the physiological impacts and high prevalence of trauma.
  • Explore the principles of TIC and universal design.
  • Consider how TIC as universal design benefits all users.
  • Analyze how current processes, environments or interactions that are central to your job could be improved through a lens of trauma-informed practice and make recommendations for improvement.

This is an interactive course that is designed for participants who want to consider practical applications to their work. CCMI uses learner-centred, performance-based approaches to adult education. The course includes learning activities that evoke understanding and build skills. These include:

  • Interactive online activities
  • A journal assignment
  • Class forum discussion
  • A final assignment with feedback from an instructor

In order to complete this course, learners will need:

  • Access to a computer, laptop, or tablet with the capability to watch and listen to video and audio.
  • Internet connection
  • Up to date browser including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Microsoft Edge. The course will not run with Internet Explorer
